The environmental impact and why we need to change

Electrical and electronic waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the UK, with approximately 2 million tones of electrical waste generated in every year. The constant development and introduction of new technologies and products makes it much more appealing for businesses and consumers to upgrade their existing equipment and dispose of their old ‘out of date’ technologies.

TV2If our old electronic waste ends up on landfill, it is not just contributing to our rising CO2 emissions; it also may be leaking harmful chemicals into the surrounding soil and groundwater. If the products are then incinerated the air will become polluted as well.

To prevent an increasing amount of electrical waste items ending up on landfill the WEEE directive was introduced in July 2007. The directive encourages businesses and consumers to correctly dispose of and recycle their old electrical items so they can be put to good use and new equipment can be made from the old reusable materials. Plastic and metals are the two most common components of electrical items. Both these materials take a very long time to decompose and so will cause most harm and long term damage to the environment if they end up on landfill.
